Kindergarten Class

Age: 5-6 years

Our Kindergarten Class is a small class size, where the teacher focuses on children's individual learning needs and abilities. Working closely with parents as a team, we strive to meet every child's developmental need. Our goal is to prepare them with all the fundamental and necessary skills for the first grade. Instruction is based upon meeting the New York State Common Care Learning Standards. The daily instruction consists of: morning circle time, reading/writing (literacy activities phonics, vocabulary building, letter identification and writing skills), math (identifying numbers 0-20, shapes, colors, addition and subtraction), and we spend time focusing on activities around the seasons, holidays, multicultural awareness, community helpers in our neighborhood, and families.

Our kindergarten teacher provides a warm and nurturing environment, where children feel happy to express their needs, wants and ask any questions they may have throughout their day. Children are able to explore and experiment the age appropriate materials in their classroom. We have children spending time throughout their day reading independently, with a partner, and at small group instruction. Music and dance here at the center also provides an outlet for the children to express themselves and be creative.

Learning Experiences:

  • Literacy skills: Phonics/sight words, vocabulary building, letter/sound identification, grammar/word usage in sentences, punctuation, and writing skills.
  • Mathematics:  Addition, subtraction, writing numbers, counting by, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 100's, money/coin classification, shape and color identification.
